KICIS Director Jim Foster visited the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at John Hopkins University in Washington, D.C. on February 27, 2014 at the invitation of SAIS Japan Program Director Kent Calder and spoke to a group of faculty, research fellows and students on the topic of “Abenomics,” the economic strategy to revive Japan’s economy announced in January 2014 by then newly elected PM Shinzo Abe.
Professor Foster assayed the progress under the strategy and argued that it was time for the Abe government to shift its emphasis from quantitative easing and fiscal stimulus to addressing structural impediments (the so-called “third arrow”) to growth in Japan’s economy, most pressingly reform of IT governance.
