In this slide deck Monica Nagashima summarizes the state of online content availability and demand within the Japanese market. Japan is the second largest market for music and remains one of the few where illegal downloading has remained unpopular due to the hardware devices that music is consumed on.

However with increased streaming services and more pervasive smartphone usage, Japan’s media industry has fallen behind as ill-construed policies and entrenched monopolies have exacerbated a “Galapagos” effect. Today, Japanese artists are prevented from reaching abroad to new audiences, and  the export of content to international users remains difficult.
